Chapter Twelve

The air around Avery felt thick. Largely because the more she and Charles spoke about the case, the more stressed out she became. There could be no pleasant way to handle the murder of a local.

Los Robles was a small town. Everybody knew each other or were mutual friends. Any time that someone died unexpectedly, it felt as if the town came to a standstill. It was the start of tourist season, so from the outside it looked as if the town was in full swing, celebrating the warmer seasons.

For the locals, it was as if the town was suffocating. Everyone was too afraid to be out at night, or to leave their businesses on their own. The normal way of doing things had changed.

“I don’t think Sam and Eleanor did this,” Charles assured her. “But I am forced to follow the evidence. Just like with any other case. Until I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that they haven’t done it. We have to keep them open as suspects.”

“I guess I understand,” Avery said with a sigh. “I don’t like it. But I get it.”

Avery sipped her wine slowly. It was a good wine, but everything seemed to taste sour to her at that point.

“There’s something else that we’ve learned that certainly makes things more interesting,” Charles said.

“More than what you’ve already told me?” Avery asked.

Charles smiled as if he knew a juicy secret. Avery leaned forward.

“Tell me,” she said eagerly.

“They know which gun fired the shot,” Charles said.

Avery was surprised. “That’s awesome!” she said. “If you know the gun, then you’ll know who it belonged to, surely.”

“Yes,” Charles said. “And we found him, only to learn that his firearm had been taken into a police station as evidence.”

“So, he’s already been arrested?” Avery asked.

“No, he was in jail at the time of the murder,” Charles further explained. “His weapon was reported stolen from the evidence.”

“Someone stole a firearm from the police?” Avery asked in shock.

“It would appear that way, yes,” Charles said.

“This sounds as if we’re dealing with a very serious criminal,” Avery said.

“All murderers are serious criminals,” Charles argued.

“I mean, I know that,” Avery teased. “I just mean we’re dealing with someone who isn’t even afraid of the police! That’s a terrifying thought.”

“You’re right, that is a terrifying thought,” Charles said.

Again, Avery felt a tightness in her chest. She hated the thought of Charles going up against someone who wasn’t afraid of him. She didn’t like the idea of him being injured or at risk while on the job.

For the most part, Los Robles was quiet, and the criminals were uninteresting and not as dangerous as those in the city. Charles had power there as a police officer. But now she was learning that the person he had to track down likely wouldn’t be afraid of him. That person would also be wielding a gun that didn’t trace back to them.

“The gun was stolen along with a large amount of cocaine,” Charles continued. “Which leads us to believe that the murderer might have been hopped up at the time of the murder.
